Tour Chichen Itzá
Although the Mayan culture was settled in different archeological zones, Chichen Itza is one of the most important and is also considered one of the new seven wonders of the world and Cultural Heritage of Humanity according to UNESCO since 1988.
Chichen Itza was the most important religious, political and military Mayan center and had its heyday towards the classic and post-classic period.
This mysterious place is called Chichén Itzá which means “in the mouth of the well of the itzaes”, because it is very close to a sacred cenote that was considered the door to the underworld.
Chichén Itzá is in a very privileged location as it is very close to an endless number of cenotes which gave it an important military and commercial power for many years as it provided water for the community. Mayan culture is all about breathtaking stories where we can imagine this entire wonderful Mayan city that was so imposing.
Meet and marvel at the pyramid of Kukulkan in Chichen Itza
The main building, the pyramid or “El Castillo” (the castle) in the center of the esplanade is one of the largest pyramids of the Mayan culture, and although it is not the highest, it is one of the most impressive remnants of this incredible culture. The Pyramid of Kukulkan measures 24 meters and was built in the 12th century AD. Recent research confirms that there are two smaller pyramids within this impressive structure that, according to the researchers, were built in the early stages of construction, leaving only visible the most recent building of the Mayan pyramid.
Discover the enormous Ball Court in Chichen Itzá
Inside Chichen Itza is one of the largest ball courts. The Mayans practiced this game with a religious and political purpose. This sociocultural activity helped the Jaguar warriors to develop physical strength from an early age.
The players are distributed throughout the field and had to make a rubber ball that weighed approximately two kilos go through a stone ring that was part of the lateral walls of the field; this was located at a height of one meter.
According to the rules of the Mayan ball game, the ball could not be hit with hands or feet and should not touch the ground, requiring participants to perform movements with the hip and lateral sides of the body to be able to score in the opponents’ ring.
